Escape into Nature

Quinta da Lila is a charming rural estate nestled in the verdant hills of the Serra de Monchique, near Monchique in the Algarve, Portugal. Surrounded by the region’s breathtaking natural beauty, this tranquil retreat offers the perfect escape into nature. Combining historic charm with modern amenities, the estate provides an eco-conscious getaway in one of the Algarve’s most serene mountain settings.

Spanning 3.3 hectares, Quinta da Lila features stone-walled terraces, primarily home to a vineyard, along with olive, lemon, orange, tangerine trees, and the rare local apple variety, “Pera de Monchique.” Beyond the cultivated terraces lies a vast area of cork oaks and strawberry trees, used to distill the renowned local firewater, “medronho.”

A standout feature of the estate is its three historic irrigation tanks, which have been transformed into plunge pools while preserving their original charm. Two of these pools are equipped with UVC filters, reducing the need for chemicals, while the third is fed by a natural spring with fresh mountain water flowing year-round. The estate is further enriched by natural springs and streams, enhancing its peaceful atmosphere and deep connection to nature.

Eco-friendly Restauration

In 2021, we acquired the land and ruins that are now known as Quinta da Lila. Abandoned since the 1980s, the farm quickly fell into disrepair. Though it was listed for sale around 2000, it took over two decades before we became its new owners. Remarkably, the previous owner retained many of the estate’s original sales contracts, with the oldest dating back to May 18, 1897, confirming the Quinta’s history extends well over 130 years—and likely much longer.

Our restoration of Quinta da Lila was guided by a commitment to ecological sustainability, with a focus on preserving the farm’s historical essence. We used eco-friendly materials, such as cork insulation, which offers superior thermal and acoustic properties while being environmentally responsible. The houses are heated with 100% electric heat pumps, providing comfortable underfloor heating during colder months and hot water is supplied by a solar-powered heating system. For the walls, we applied a special “biocal” plaster, an eco-friendly, breathable material that aligns with the natural construction techniques of old, offering a sustainable alternative to modern plasters.

Additionally, we meticulously restored the original stone paths and terrace walls, some of which have stood for over a century, enhancing the Quinta’s authentic charm.

The creative vision for the restoration was expertly crafted by our friends at StudioArte, who had previously worked with us on our first project, Casa da Lila, Silves. We were supported by Concepto Studio on the development of the interior and art concept.

Old and New in Harmony

During the restoration, we ensured that all authentic details were preserved. We maintained the original footprint of the buildings, faithfully reconstructing them as they were intended by those who built the farm over a century ago. Since there were no existing connections for electricity or mains water, we had these installed. Each unit now offers modern comforts like underfloor heating, air conditioning, and wood burners, ensuring the Quinta remains cozy in any weather. Hot water is provided by our solar-powered heating system.

In the next phase of restoration, planned for 2026, we aim to install solar panels to generate electricity and add an electric car charging station for guests traveling in electric vehicles.

When selecting the interior furnishings, we prioritized vintage pieces to minimize the need for new purchases. This approach not only supports sustainability by reusing beautifully crafted items but also enhances the character of the interiors, as vintage pieces often carry a unique charm that newer furniture lacks.

The First Eco-friendly Vineyard of Monchique

When we first purchased the estate, it was completely overrun with brambles and other unwanted vegetation. After a thorough clearing process that took over three weeks, we uncovered numerous terraces, most of which had stone walls still in excellent condition.

Through conversations with local neighbors, we learned more about the farm’s history. These terraces were once used to grow crops such as sweet potatoes, corn, and various cereals. Monchique also had a rich history of vineyards. Local archives from 1793 mention numerous vineyards and ordinances enacted to protect them. However, in the late 19th century, European vineyards, including those in Monchique, were wiped out by a fungal blight and phylloxera, a tiny insect.

When we discovered the beautiful terraces, we were inspired to bring this tradition back. In April 2024, we planted over 7,000 vines, including Syrah, Viognier, Cabernet Sauvignon, Alicante Bouschet, and Touriga Nacional, to create an eco-friendly vineyard—Monchique’s first of its kind. The wines, primarily reds and rosés, will also be produced locally, making them 100% Monchique, a unique distinction. While we won’t taste the first bottles until 2027, the vineyard brings an exciting revival of the area’s winemaking heritage.

This development adds another layer of appeal for guests who are passionate about sustainable practices, organic farming, and, of course, fine wine.
